15 Steps to Cultivate Lifelong Learning

3) Get More Intellectual Friends
Start spending more time with people who think. Not just people who are smart. But people who actually invest much of their time in learning new skills. Their habits will rub off on you. Even better, they will probably share some of their knowledge with you.

9) Unlearn Assumptions
You can’t add water to a full cup. I always try to maintain a distance away from any idea. Too many convictions simply mean too few paths for new ideas. Actively seek out information that contradicts your worldview. (read more...)

Wisdom of Jesse Livermore

(Chapter V) “The reason is that a man may see straight and clearly and yet become impatient or doubtful when the market takes its time about doing as he figured it must do. That is why so many men in Wall Street, who are not at all in the sucker class, not even in the third grade, nevertheless lose money. The market does not beat them. They beat themselves, because though they have brains they cannot sit tight.” (read more...)

Behavioural Finance

Mental anchoring on past patterns
Almost all investors use some form of reference before making a decision. One such reference is mental anchoring — a phenomenon where people use only one set of facts or a single idea to make decisions. Mental anchoring is also used in behavioural finance to explain how investors use past standards or patterns to make decisions. The phenomenon is also known as mental reference. (read more...)

Clustering Illusion
This is the tendency to see patterns where none actually exist. A study conducted by Thomas Gilovich, showed people were easily misled to think patterns existed in random sequences. Although this may be a necessary by product of our ability to detect patterns, it can create problems. The clustering illusion can result in superstitions and falling for pseudoscience when patterns seem to emerge from entirely random events. (read more...)

Air HK contract to lift Transmile earnings

The contract is like an outsourcing activity. Transmile was leasing its aircraft and crew to Air Hong Kong to help the latter transport cargo between Hong Kong and Beijing, and vice versa, industry sources told StarBiz. They said this was a lucrative part of the air cargo business for those with idle capacity, given the shortage of cargo planes worldwide. Also, aircraft owners need not worry about load factors. Nuclear Energy

Will Malaysia accelerate plans for nuclear energy?
Malaysia should turn to nuclear energy as an alternative source of electricity as emerging economies and developed nations compete for scarce energy resources. This, according to Noramly Muslim, the chairman of the Malaysian Nuclear Licensing Board. The Malaysian government is preparing to use nuclear energy for power generation after 2020 but the plans could be accelerated. (read more...)

The Rat Race - Tenaga

Decision, Decision
We believe the Malaysian government is currently faced with a big headache in managing the gas price issue. On one hand, Petronas has been lobbying hard for an upward adjustment in the processed gas prices supplied to both the power sector and the industrial players. On the other hand, Tenaga, 37% owned by Khazanah, wants to make sure that any hike in gas price will be accompanied by an electricity tariff hike to protect its profit margin. Finally, there is also the welfare of the masses in the equation where the government may have to consider without being overly burdened by the changes in electricity tariffs. (Source: theedgedaily.com)

A Rate Race
A rat race is a term used for an endless, self-defeating or pointless pursuit. It conjures up the image of the futile efforts of a lab rat trying to escape whilst running around a maze or in a wheel. In an analogy to the modern city, many rats in a single maze run around making a lots of noise bumping into each other, but ultimately achieve nothing (meaningful) either collectively or individually. (Source: Wikipedia)

ZenTrader Note: Technically based on Money Flow Index the Price Action indicated that the Rat Race has found its way out and the government will have no option but to solve the root of the real problem ie to hike the electricity tariff and renegotiate the IPP contracts or else turn off the POWER once and for all. Also a stronger RM will not only help TNB's bottom line but also the government's ability to balance out the imported inflation. Tenaga (5347) is now trading at RM9.35 and it is backed by NTA of RM5.6 per share. Next Thur, Oct 25 2007 TNB will have some number to show us. The Energy Crunch, is it real or phony? I don't know but it reminded me the last Energy Crisis. At that time we were having family holiday trip in Taiwan and by 10.00pm the whole hotel will have no power supply (I think the whole city) and all the guest rooms were without TV, light, I think air-con too ... the feeling that time was that it was COOL and kind of Peaceful and a very quiet night. US Recession in 2007 - Third Leg of the Bear Market Likely

Debt
One of our main arguments has been that U.S. consumers are holding unsustainable levels of debt. The chart below from Ian Gordon, from The Long Wave Analyst shows private debt levels to GDP overlaid with his interpretation of the Kondratieff Wave. Without giving a lengthy description of the Kondratieff Wave, let us just say that as interest rates fall, investors are willing to take on more debt. Much of this credit is spent or used to fuel asset bubbles. Eventually bubbles exhaust themselves and deflate assets but debt is still owed. Participants must default on their debts causing loss of faith in financial institutions and subsequent depression. As you can see debt is now 300% of GNP, much higher than in 1929. (read more...)

RAM puts TM, Celcom on rating watch

While the details of the overall capital management strategy has yet to be confirmed, RAM Ratings expects that TM will have a better post-demerger balance sheet and cashflow coverage. Meanwhile, the eventual credit profile of TM International will have a material effect on the rating of Celcom and, possibly, Hijrah Pertama. RAM Ratings highlights that TM International has a more risky business profile compared to TM, given the former’s strong focus on foreign markets where the operating environments are often more challenging and competitive. Moreover, we can expect TM International to stay on an acquisitive path – and likely leverage further - given its aim to become an active and dynamic regional telecommunications player. Compounded by the heavy capital expenditure (“capex”) required in these markets, and the ensuing heftier debt burden, the credit profile of TM International is likely to be weaker compared to TM. As such, Celcom could be exposed to a weaker parent company, as well as “group risks” associated with TM International, and the fact that Celcom will no longer be under the domestic giant, TM Group. Moving forward, the proposed demerger may cause Celcom to lose the synergistic benefits from TM’s infrastructure and strong position as Malaysia’s national telecommunications company. (read more...)

Poker King vs Casino King

Hong Leong Bank
Hong Leong Bank was founded by Mr. Lam Ting Yeu and began its operations in 1905 in Kuching, Sarawak under the name of Kwong Lee Mortgage & Remittance Company. On 3 January 1994, the Hong Leong Group Malaysia acquired MUI Bank Berhad through Hong Leong Credit Berhad and renamed it as Hong Leong Bank Berhad (HLBB). HLBB was listed on the Kuala Lumpur Stock Exchange on 17 October 1994 with its total paid?up capital enlarged to RM 470 million. Since then, the growth of the Bank has been remarkable. (Source: Wikipedia)

ZenTrader's Note: In 1989 after HUME failed to acquire MPHB which owned a commercial bank named Malaysia French Bank, Tan Sri Quek Leng Chan went to MUI Group and acquired one of the smallest bank in town named Kwong Lee Mortgate or MUI Bank and then transformed it into a Banking Giant now known as Hong Leong Bank. However, we know that the banking landscape has changed since then as BNM is now in the process of re-institulization the banking sector and many old names such as Tan Sri Rashid Hussain , Taib Family, Tan Sri Tan of Sounthern Bank have exited the banking sector. I think the MPHB for Tan Sri Quek is more important than what we think it is. If the acquisition of MPHB is as simple as finding a listed shell for his oversea casino business I think they are more sexy shell for Tan Sri to cherry pick. For example Tebrau, simple Asset Mix with no debt and no core business basically so my view is that this is one of the biggest battle Tan Sri will fight for as unlike last time they were more bank than rice shop in town. For gaming license this time, it has NOT many. The important question now is that a Banking Giant such as Tan Sri Quek planning to enter the gaming world in big way, you think Uncle Lim will NOT be watching each and every of his moves? One good thing about Gaming Sector is that CIMB's CEO Nazir Razak cannot go after it as it is prevented by his religious to touch this sector. As long as you fully pay your sin tax, no body from UMMO Linked Company will be interested in your Gaming Empire and I think Tan Sri is ready to pay TOP Dollar for this privilege. Happy reading.

Pan-Electric Liquidation
Creditor banks suspended talks to rescue Pan-Electric last month, soon after Tan Koon Swan, a Malaysian businessman and political leader, was arrested as a result of Government investigations into the financial dealings of Pan-Electric. When Pan-Electric went into receivership in December after failing to meet $187 million in debt payments, the Singapore and Kuala Lumpur stock exchanges closed for three days. (Source: REUTERS)

Case Study on Pan-Electric Crisis
The Pan-Electric crisis is significant, if nothing else, as the reason the Singapore Stock Exchange (SES) was closed for the first and only time in its history. The collapse of Pan-El following its huge debts and inability to make good on forward contracts precipitated a systemic crisis that threatened the entire then-nascent stockbroking industry. (Source: MAS)

ZenTrader's Note: I think MPHB CEO's Office maybe NOT very good Feng Shui as most of their CEO will somehow involved in very big International Court Case and also keep in mind that if Mr. Surin were to do what he will do as predicted by ZenTrader's Prisoner Dilemma Theory, the implication on Thai, Singapore and Malaysia Stock Market will be very BIG! ACQUISITION OF MULTI-PURPOSE HOLDINGS BERHAD: A CASE ANALYSIS

In this episode MPHB was offered RM1.13 billion for its entire paid-up capital by Hume Industries Berhad. KCB entered the scene as a white knight through an offer to buy over Koperatif Sebaguna Malaysia (KSM), a major shareholder of MPHB.

THE PREDATOR Hume Industries (Malaysia) Berhad, which all this while had kept a low profile in the corporate scene, suddenly shot into the limelight on 12 April 1989 with its proposed offer for MPHB. The RM1.13 billion bid, the biggest ever in Malaysia at that time had set the market talking, especially since it had the setting of a hostile takeover.

There was an exceptionally high trading volume of MPHB shares in both the Kuala Lumpur and Singapore stock exchanges in the last five weeks before Hume takeover announcement. At one point more than 60 million shares changed hands on a single market day. Over the heavy trading period, the MPHB share price which was previously languishing around RM1.00 moved up steadily and hurriedly to around RM1.53 by 25 April 1989. (Source: Faculty of Economics & Administration, Universiti Malaya)

ZenTrader's Note: I think the planned takeover by HUME was related to MPHB's Banking License as Hong Leong Group was one of the tycoon in Malaysia without a banking license at that time. My view is that the hottest game in town today is Casino Play so it is not a surprise the real Hidden CARD this time is the Gaming License owned by MPHB's Magnum & I think he must have a real big gaming game for all of us to play. The classical prisoner's dilemma

In this game, as in all game theory, the only concern of each individual player ("prisoner") is maximizing his/her own payoff, without any concern for the other player's payoff. In the classic form of this game, cooperating is strictly dominated by defecting, so that the only possible equilibrium for the game is for all players to defect. In simpler terms, no matter what the other player does, one player will always gain a greater payoff by playing defect. Since in any situation playing defect is more beneficial than cooperating, all rational players will play defect, all things being equal. (Source: wikipedia)

Game Theory: MPHB's Prisoner Dilemma

For those who have economic background should know that the optimal choice for Mr. Surin is to confess as this is the best strategy based on Prisoner Dilemma Theory.

However if Mr. Surin were to confess to Thai authority his business empire will be at risk. I think the big question here is that the block of share owned by Mr. Surin may or may not goto Poker King as someone with very experienced corporate M & A background with strong working relationship with Temasek (howcome this person sounded like CMY) maybe able to take advantage for the fact that at this stage it is very hard for Mr. Q to backoff from MPHB and the only way out is to pay top dollar for this share and by all mean this is happy ending story. However, from the Congo Trap we can see that the whole story may not be that simple and the opponent may not be friendly to Poker King as this maybe a Casino King vs Poker King and in the poker game they said if after 5 minutes if you still cannot tell who is the sucker on the table most likely you are the big sucker. Quek sells his Multi-Purpose shares

If Quek is paring his stake in Multi-Purpose, it would leave him holding 14.4 million of the company's shares. However, if he were to fork out RM206.9 million to convert all his warrants into shares, he would still hold an 11.4% stake in Multi-Purpose. It should be noted that Quek bought his original block at RM1.80, which is five sen higher than the selling price of the more recent blocks of shares.

Looking at the bigger picture, these shareholding changes may just prove to be the harbinger of more significant things to come for Multi-Purpose. "This could be the sign that there is a major corporate exercise in the works," says the source.

Industry observers felt that Multi-Purpose was undervalued, given its rich asset base.

Google 'to test rival to Second Life'

Speculation that the new tool would be an immersive virtual world to rival Second Life and created by Google, was fuelled by a blog post this year from Michael Eisenberg, a partner at Benchmark Capital, the technology-focused venture capital group, who said he had heard “through the PhD grapevine ... Second Life: It's not a game (for TM)

By early January more than 3,000 IBM employees had acquired their own avatars, and about 300 were routinely conducting company business inside Second Life. "The 3-D Internet may at first appear to be eye candy," Palmisano writes in an e-mail interview, "but don't get hung up on how frivolous some of its initial uses may seem." He calls 3-D realms such as Second Life the "next phase of the Internet's evolution" and says they may have "the same level of impact" as the first Web explosion.

This virtual world - don't call it a game - has become a phenomenon: Second Life, which is free for casual use, has about 334,000 regular visitors. More than 2.6 million have checked it out, a figure that in mid-January was growing by about 20,000 per day.

But what's beginning to catch the attention of IBM and other huge corporations is something potentially far more profound than a new online pastime. It's the ability to use Second Life as a platform for a whole new Net - this one in 3-D and even more social than the original - with huge opportunities to sell products and services.

ZenTrader's Note: I think the Demerger Plan will give TM a Real Sexy Second Life.
