Why Bond Analyst & Equity Analyst see thing differently?

Overstatement shocks analysts, Thursday May 31, 2007
PETALING JAYA: Most analysts were shocked to find the overstatement of Transmile Group Bhd’s revenue to be over RM300mil for the financial year ended Dec 31, 2006. “I’m speechless. I didn’t expect the figure to be so huge,” said an analyst who covered the stock. He said the overstatement was a serious accounting issue, which would raise doubts among investors. “Confidence in the company may drop as we cannot rely on them for accurate information,” he added. (Source: The Star)

Rating outlook revised from stable to negative, 25 November 2005
The change in outlook is premised on the Company’s weaker balance sheet and debt-servicing ability due to its expansion plan and heightened business risks. Although RAM is cognisant of the tremendous business opportunities offered by the Asia-Pacific routes, it is also noted that competition is stiff. At this point, it is premature to conclude whether Transmile will be able to secure sufficient and sustainable loads for its new aircraft in order to generate returns from its investment. RAM highlights that the MD-11s boast a capacity of 90 tonnes each, i.e. 4.5 times larger than the 20 tonnes of the Company’s intra-regional aircraft. (Source: RAM, Analyst: Wee Yee Tat)

Note: Mr. Wee Yee Tat, Bond Analyst for RAM should deserve a 5 STARS rating for downgrading the rating to negative back in 2005 while most equity analyst upgrading this co to strong buy. What puzzled me is that why bond and equity analyst will see thing differently? I think the key different is that bond analyst is more concerned with actual CASH and whether or not it is created out of air or airplane whereby equity analyst is more concerned with projected profit and RNAV figures. Bond analyst look from the past/historical pattern and predict into future event and equity analyst look into future event to predict the future. See the big picture? Happy reading.

CHINA'S GREAT DEPRESSION

Having recently completed Rothbard’s “America’s Great Depression”, I couldn’t help draw the parallels between America’s roaring 20’s and China’s roaring economy today, and I couldn’t help conclude that China will inevitably fall in a depression just like America did during the 1930s. The objective of this article is to present an Austrian argument as to why this must happen.

We should also consider another possible trigger for a bust, namely trade surpluses turning into trade deficits due to the accelerated rise of prices for resources, such as commodities, which China must import. Faced with trade deficits, China may decide to dishoard surpluses by selling U.S. government bonds, or it may decide to abandon its peg to the dollar. In either case, this will exacerbate the problems of the ailing U.S. economy, which in turn will boomerang back to China.

Finally, the bust may be triggered by a worldwide crisis in crude oil supplies. Peak oil supply is around the corner, if not already behind us, and Middle East or Caspian instability could sharply cut oil supplies. Historically, oil shortages and their concomitant rise of oil prices have always induced a recession. China’s growing dependence on oil ensures that should an oil crisis occur, it will slip into recession.

To summarize, the likely candidates for a trigger to the Chinese depression are (1) a worldwide currency, banking, or derivatives crisis, (2) a U.S. recession, (3) the containment of runaway inflation, (4) the disappearance of Chinese trade surpluses, and (5) an oil supply crisis. (read more...)

Turkish Delight - Salary Hike for Malaysian Civil Servants

KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia (AP) - Malaysia's move to give civil servants a hefty pay rise will boost economic growth but could cause the budget deficit to rise for the first time since 1999, economists said Tuesday. A higher deficit however, suggests that the possibility of a cut in personal income taxes is "very small," Sia added. The government reduced corporate taxes last year. Despite the risk of a higher deficit, the impact on the real economy could be significant. Sia estimates the measure could add 5.4 billion ringgit (US$1.6 billion, euro1.2 billion) in consumer spending annually and lift GDP by 0.5 percentage point this year and 1 percentage point in 2008. The government forecast the economy to grow 6 percent this year. (read more...)

Edmund Pevensie & Turkish Delight

Edmund, who began to act meanly after attending a new school, was cruelly dismissive to Lucy when she first finds the entrance to Narnia through the wardrobe, and is the second of the Pevensie children to go to Narnia, after following Lucy to tease her. While there, he meets the White Witch and eats some enchanted Turkish Delight, which causes an addiction in the person who eats it. As a result, he promises the Witch that he will bring his siblings to her house, not knowing that she intends to kill them all to prevent the fulfillment of a Narnian prophecy. (read more...)

The Ties That Bind the Middle East and Asia

Combine these two factors and you have one of the most interesting capital shifts in the world economy. The economic linkages—capital, trade, and mergers and acquisitions between these regions have tightened dramatically this decade. Bilateral trade basically doubled to $240 billion during the first half of this decade.

China, meanwhile, is getting strategic investments from the Middle East to help upgrade its energy infrastructure. Dubai-based DP World is funding the $500 million development of a port in Tianjin, while a $5 billion refinery in the Guangdong province will be built by Kuwaiti investors.

Indeed, China likely will continue to be a money magnet for Middle East investment. Beijing is trying to shore up its energy infrastructure—and gulf countries view China and India as among their most critical customers in the 21st century. It was telling that after taking the throne in 2005, Saudi King Abdullah made his first overseas trip to China, and not to a bigger consumer of oil products, namely the U.S. The Middle East–Asia economic relationship is definitely starting to bloom. China Bubble & The Arabian's Thousand and One Nights

The Middle East provides clues on the outcome of the meteoric recent rise of the Chinese stock market, warns Tim Harris, JPMorgan Private Bank’s chief investment strategist in Europe, Middle East and Africa.

When a liquidity-inspired bull market takes to the wing, it is difficult to judge its scope and momentum by traditional valuation tools alone,” he says. “But there are parallels between Chinese equities and the bubble that developed and burst in many Middle East markets over 2004-06.

“When the bubble was pricked, there was no single clear catalyst – similar to the dotcom boom in March 2000. It’s just that the bubble had reached its tautest, and the marginal buyer could not be found.

“In China, the ‘greater fool’ theory appears alive and well. In April, some 5m new equity trading accounts were registered in April alone, bringing the total to 90m. This could yet sustain the Chinese stock market rally for some time.” (read more...)

China manned Moon trip by 2020

China plans to land a human on the moon by 2020, the country's chief space official said in comments broadcast by state television. "By 2020, we will achieve visiting the moon," said Luan Enjie, director of the National Aerospace Bureau. Luan used a verb that specifically describes a human act. Luan said that would follow the launch of a probe to orbit the moon by 2007 and an unmanned lunar landing by 2010. China's once-secret space program has released a stream of such disclosures following the Oct. 15 flight of astronaut Yang Liwei on the country's first manned space voyage. "We will focus on deep space exploration. The first target selected is the moon," Luan said Thursday. Source: AP

The China syndrome: what next?
China’s stock market is now worth more than 70 per cent of GDP, notes Stephen Green, senior economist in global research at Standard Chartered Bank — still below US/UK levels of 150 per cent of GDP but well above its 2001 level of 15 per cent. “This means it is beginning to have economic significance — though the speed of the ramp-up means that if there was a correction of 30 per cent today, the overall macro-effects would be limited.

Hence, as CLSA’s subscriber newsletter, Greed & Fear (G&F), observes, newly-opened (yuan-denominated) accounts by A-share retail investors grew by 191 per cent in March, while there were 4.49m newly opened A-share accounts in the first four weeks of April alone — compared with a total of 3.08m new A-share accounts opened in the whole of last year, according to China Securities Depository and Clearing Corp.

“The market is surely overdue some stock-market focused tightening measures from the authorities in the short term… But in the longer term, the A-share market seems heading for a full-scale mania, by which is meant a market trading on 50-60x forward earnings, as opposed to the current rating of 33x,” says G&F.

The only thing that can stop this — given the fuel represented by trapped liquidity, A-share listings of H shares and low deposit rates, says G&F, “is aggressive monetary tightening”.

But so far, the Chinese authorities have only engaged in token tightening. G&F’s conclusion is that “the authorities will remain reluctant to really tighten in the 15 months’ lead up to China’s coming-out ball, which is of course the Beijing Olympics”. (read more...)

May Durian Party

The Legend of Durian and Zheng He
Childhood legend abounds in Malaysia about why durian looks and smells like this. Well, the legend goes that Sam Poh Kong (Zheng He) had to go to the bath room in the jungle and there was no toilet. So he went up to a tree and did it up there using leaves to wrap his offerings to nature. Well this tree used to be a prickly pear, but from then on its prickly pear contained a pungent but nutricious inner fruit.

Langkawi Legends & Folklore

During the reign of Sultan Abdullah Mukarram Shah the Second (1762-1800), a man named Pandak Maya came to Langkawi seeking his fortune. After eating some enchanted rice grains, his wife was soon blessed with a beautiful daughter, Mahsuri, who eventually married Mat Deris, the son of Langkawi's chief. Her beauty led to jealous and wrongful accusations of adultery and Mahsuri was subsequently sentenced to death. During the execution at Padang Hangus, she was stabbed with a special kris (Malay dagger), and witnesses claimed to see white blood gushing from her wound, as if to prove her innocence. Instantly, a mysterious mist shrouded the area. For the injustice done to her and her unborn child, Mahsuri laid a curse as she died--Langkawi was not to prosper for the next seven generations. Semiconductor Market Takes a Breather Ahead of a Stronger 2008

While the semiconductor market will take a breather in 2007, the medium too long term was a different picture, according to most ISS speakers. “Long term we have fantastic things to look forward to,” said Bill McClean, president of IC Insights. He believes the next peak in the semiconductor cycle will come in 2008, the year of the U.S. presidential election and the Beijing Olympic Games – events that will boost global economic confidence and growth.

The economic keynote at ISS 2007 was delivered by Edward Prescott, a Nobel Laureate in economics and senior monetary advisor at the Federal Reserve Bank of Minneapolis. He was bullish on 2007, predicting that both the U.S. dollar and the stock market would not fall. Rather, they “will likely appreciate in both cases.”

Prescott noted that the information technology (IT) revolution, which in his view has only just started, will be as significant as the agricultural revolution and the industrial revolution in its impact on society. “The digital revolution will propel progress for at least the next 100 years,” he said. The Characteristics of Leveraged Buyout Firms

This paper investigates the determinants of leveraged buyout (LBO)activity by comparing firms that have implemented LBOs to those that have not. The analysis considers sources of gains from LBOs as well as the costs that can arise from the large amount of debt included in their financial strutures. Consitent with the free cash flowe theory we find that firms that initiate LBOs can be characterized as having a combination of unfavorable investment opportunities (low Tobin’s q) and relatively high cash flow. In addion, firms likely to have high costs of financial distress (e.g. firms with high R&D expenditures), are less likely to do LBOs.

For the ancient Greeks, fire had divine connotations — it was thought to have been stolen from the gods by Prometheus. Therefore, fire was also present at many of the sanctuaries in Olympia, Greece. A fire permanently burned on the altar of Hestia in Olympia, Greece. During the Olympic Games, which honored Zeus, additional fires were lit at his temple and that of his wife, Hera. China's coke industry to see integration

China has a built mechanized coke capacity of 250 million tons. With the throughput in construction of 80 million tons, China will boast an annual coke capacity of 330 million tons, 136 million tons more than the domestic consumption in 2004 of 194 million tons, said Hou Shiguo, deputy director of the Department of Industrial Policy of the State Development and Reform Commission ( SDRC).

As a result of the excessive coke surplus yield capacity and control efforts from the central government on the coke industry, Hua Zugui, Chairman and CEO of China Coal and Coke Holdings Limited, a major coke producer and seller in the country, said that the industry is likely to see a large-scale integration in one or two years.

THE ELEPHANT AND THE ANT

This elephant was walking through the jungle one day when she got a thorn in her foot. The further she walked, the more sore it got. After a while she started to limp. After a while, this ant walks up and asks, "Hey, what's the matter?"

The elephant answers, "I've got this thorn in my foot and I would do anything to get it out."

The ant says, "Anything? Would you let me make love to you?"

The elephant thought about it for a minute and decided what the heck. How bad could an ant be? So she agreed.

The ant started pulling on the thorn and sure enough, he got it out. True to her word, the elephant laid down on her side and moved her tail out of the way. The ant crawled up and started loving on her.

This monkey was up in a tree watching this. He couldn't quite believe his eyes. He started laughing and rolling around in the tree. Then he knocked a coconut out of the tree that went down and hit the elephant right between the ears.

The elephant moaned loudly from the hit,"Awwoooohhhhh!"

The ant yelled at the top of his voice, "Take it all darling, take it all!!" (Source: Laughter is a Great Way to Relax)

Trans-Peninsula plans massive investment

MALAYSIA has agreed to build a US$7 billion trans-peninsular oil pipeline from Kedah to Kelantan to transport oil from West Asia to East Asian countries, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi said today. “Yes, we have agreed to the pipeline,” he told reporters after opening the World Halal Forum 2007. Abdullah said the pipeline project was a part of the government’s move to develop the much-touted Northern Corridor. (read more hot news...)

Court Evidence

Mr. law said: "what you said can be and will be used against you in a court of law"

I called my lawyer friend and ask for her legal opinion and she said: "Does having a male organ can be and will be used against you in a court of law? You can use it for personal fun ... yes ... but you have to obey the law ie in Singapore it is unlawful to perform oral one ... and it is unlawful to perform unnatural one in Malaysia ... BTW, thank for your tip on StemLife ... hea hea hea"

Zentrader: "Mr. Law, with the above stock picks, you think this is the court evidence you are going to present to the court? Mr. Law, please don't assume all bloggers are bad guys lah. Don't assume those who donate money to someone else must have hidden agenda lah. See the big picture?" :)

What is the purpose of law?

Frederick Bastiat in his book The Law, further helps us define and understand the purpose of law:

We must remember that law is force, and that, consequently, the proper functions of the law cannot lawfully extend beyond the proper functions of force. When law and force keep a person within the bounds of justice, they impose nothing but a mere negation. They oblige him only to abstain from harming others. They violate neither his personality, his liberty nor his property. They safeguard all of these. They are defensive; they defend equally the rights of all.

So we can see that law is force and that it must apply equally to all if liberty is to be protected. If it applies unequally to one class of persons over another, then it turns from being an instrument of liberty to an instrument of oppression and tyranny.

Many people think the purpose of law is to promote justice. According to Bastiat, the purpose of law is to prevent injustice. Law is a negative concept and not a positive concept. Law is there to prevent harm, not to encourage or mandate good. (read more...)

Online Fraud Aimed at Hotel Guests

The fraud relies on a variation of the old pump-and-dump scheme in which criminals illegally hype a stock to inflate its price. In the latest twist, crooks install keystroke-logging programs on computers in hotel business centers and Internet cafes. When an investor uses the public computer to check stock holdings or make a trade, his or her username and password are captured. The FBI's Henry said online brokerage customers shouldn't use computers they don't know are secure. "I don't think a lot of people would think twice about going to an Internet cafe or the business center in a hotel and using the computer,"' he said. "I want people to be aware that this is a potential threat." (read more...)

Property sales by forgers leave owners high and dry

KUALA LUMPUR - A SIX-YEAR-OLD land case is haunting property owners in Malaysia as dozens have suddenly found themselves with no remedy after their land was sold by forgers. Lawyers say there are at least 17 to 20 cases where mainly elderly land owners found their lands sold to a third party by a forger. Under the law as it stands, following a court case in 2001, they have no remedy. The Federal Court, in the case of Adorna Properties v Boonsom Boonyanit, decided that if a property was sold through forgery to an innocent buyer, the law favours the buyer. (read more...)
